Japan Visa from India: There Is No Sticker in Your Passport Any More
Japan issues Indian applicants an electronic visa rather than a sticker, and you have to show it on a phone at the airport. What the eVisa changed, what it costs, and the practical failure nobody warns you about.
Ananya kept flipping through her passport looking for the visa. She had applied, she had been approved, she had the confirmation. There was nothing pasted on any page, and for a worrying half hour before her flight she was convinced something had gone wrong. Nothing had. Japan simply does not put a sticker in Indian applicants' passports any more.
Ananya is an illustration, but the confusion is genuine and it has a sharper edge than mere anxiety. The electronic visa has to be produced at the airport, on a screen, and that requirement has a practical failure mode most travellers do not plan for.
Japan has issued eVisas in India since 1 April 2024, for single-entry short-term tourism of up to 90 days. Applications go through the Japan Visa Application Centres run by VFS Global, and the visa arrives electronically rather than as a sticker. From 1 July 2026 the visa fee for Indian nationals is INR 500 for single or multiple entry, with the VFS service fee charged on top.
What the eVisa Changed
The Japan eVisa system started in India on 1 April 2024. It covers single-entry short-term stays for tourism, of up to 90 days, and is open to Indian nationals and to foreign nationals resident in India.
The mechanics of applying did not change as much as people expect. You still submit through a Japan Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global. What changed is the output: instead of a visa sticker in your passport, you receive a visa issuance notice in electronic form.
The visa issuance notice has to be shown on a mobile device at the airport, and displaying it needs internet access. A screenshot is not what is being asked for, a dead battery is a problem, and an Indian SIM with no roaming in a transit airport is a problem. Charge the phone, and know how you will get online before you reach the counter.
What It Costs
- Visa fee for Indian nationals, from 1 July 2026: INR 500, for single or multiple entry.
- The VFS Global service fee is charged in addition to that.
By international standards this is a low fee, and it is worth saying so plainly, because the gap between the government fee and what some intermediaries charge is wide. If a service is quoting you many multiples of this, you are paying for their handling rather than for the visa.
Short-Term Stay Means What It Says
The eVisa route covers short-term tourism of up to 90 days. It is not a work permission, not a study permission, and not a route to a longer stay that gets extended after arrival.
If your purpose is anything other than a short visit, the eVisa is the wrong instrument and applying under it because it is the convenient one is the kind of mismatch that causes trouble at the border rather than at the application stage.
What a Japanese Visitor Application Rests On
Japan places unusual weight on the itinerary. Where some consulates want to see funds and ties above all, a Japanese application is read for whether the trip described actually hangs together:
- A day-by-day schedule that is internally consistent and matches your bookings.
- Financial capacity for the trip as described, from an explainable source.
- Accommodation that corresponds to the itinerary rather than contradicting it.
- A clear, temporary purpose with a defined end.
A schedule assembled quickly to fill a required field, with cities in an impossible order or hotel dates that do not match the travel days, undermines the rest of a perfectly good application. Build the itinerary from the bookings you actually hold, not the other way round.
Where Applications from India Usually Go Wrong
- Searching the passport for a sticker that will not be there, and assuming the application failed.
- Arriving at the airport with a flat phone or no way to get online to display the visa issuance notice.
- Paying an intermediary many times the actual visa fee without realising how low the official charge is.
- An itinerary that does not match the accommodation or flight dates.
- Applying under short-term tourism for a trip whose real purpose is something else.
- Leaving too little time before travel, because the eVisa still goes through a visa application centre.
If Your Situation Is Not Straightforward
- You are a foreign national resident in India rather than an Indian citizen.
- You are travelling for business meetings rather than tourism.
- You are visiting relatives who will host you.
- You need multiple entries rather than one.
- You have a previous refusal from Japan or elsewhere.
- Your trip is longer than a short-term stay allows.
How Visaworx Helps
Visaworx is a visa intelligence and guidance service from KLAR Travels. We do not issue Japanese visas and we do not speak for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or its visa application centres. Where we are useful is in checking that the trip you are describing holds together on paper before it is submitted, and that you are applying under the right category for what you actually intend to do.
Before You Fly
- Expect an electronic notice, not a sticker.
- Charge your phone and arrange internet access for the airport.
- Check the government fee before agreeing to any handling charge.
- Make the itinerary match the bookings exactly.
- Apply under the category that matches your real purpose.
Japanese visa fees and the scope of the eVisa system have both changed since it launched in India, and the fee stated here took effect on 1 July 2026. Everything was verified against Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Embassy of Japan sources on 21 August 2026. Confirm the current position before you apply.

Popular Questions
Related Frequently Asked Questions
Does Japan still put a visa sticker in the passport for Indian applicants?
No. Since the eVisa system started in India on 1 April 2024, approved applicants receive a visa issuance notice in electronic form rather than a sticker. An empty passport page does not mean the application failed. You will need to produce the electronic notice at the airport instead.
How do I show a Japan eVisa at the airport?
On a mobile device, and displaying it requires internet access. That makes a charged phone and a working connection part of your travel documents in practice. Plan for how you will get online at the airport, particularly if you are connecting through a country where your Indian SIM will not roam.
How much is a Japanese visa for Indian nationals?
From 1 July 2026 the fee for Indian nationals is INR 500, for single or multiple entry, with the VFS Global service fee charged in addition. This is low by international standards, so if an intermediary is quoting many multiples of it, you are paying for their handling rather than for the visa itself.
What does the Japan eVisa cover?
Single-entry short-term stays for tourism, of up to 90 days. It is open to Indian nationals and to foreign nationals resident in India. It is not a work or study permission and is not a route to a longer stay extended after arrival. If your purpose is different, the eVisa is the wrong instrument.
How much does the itinerary matter for a Japanese visa?
More than for most destinations. A Japanese application is read for whether the trip described actually hangs together, so a schedule with cities in an impossible order or hotel dates that contradict the flights undermines an otherwise sound application. Build the itinerary from the bookings you hold rather than inventing one to fill the field.
